Consultation of Day School Tuition Subvention Programs: Summary Report

A JESNA summary report of a March 1999 consultation with five foundations that offer day school tuition subvention programs. The consultation provided a forum for information sharing about the programs, the lessons learned, and the direction for future research.

Day School Tuition Subvention, Reduction, and Scholarship Programs

This research on tuition subvention, reduction and scholarship programs, one of the initial projects of the Affordability Working Group of the Continental Council for Jewish Day School Education, is a follow-up and expansion of the original research on tuition subventions (Consultation on Day School Tuition Subvention Programs: Summary Report 1999).

Digest of Education Statistics, 2008

The 44th in a series of publications initiated in 1962, the Digest's primary purpose is to provide a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of American education from prekindergarten through graduate school. The Digest contains data on a variety of topics, including the number of schools and colleges, teachers, enrollments, and graduates, in addition to educational attainment, finances, and federal funds for education, libraries, and international comparisons.

Edward Fein Foundation Scholarship Awards

Through the Edward Fein Foundation Scholarship Awards program at QuestBridge, the Foundation seeks to ensure access to higher education for high-achieving Jewish students who may lack the financial resources necessary to secure the highest quality education available. The Edward Fein Foundation Scholarship Awards program at QuestBridge is open to all Jewish high school juniors who meet the QuestBridge criteria of high academic skill, economic need, and demonstrated leadership potential.

Jewish Studies Expansion Program (JSEP)

In the fall of 2007, the Foundation launched the Jewish Studies Expansion Program (JSEP), a pilot program aimed at enhancing Jewish studies at underserved colleges and universities around the country. Supported by a generous $1.05 million grant from the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation (CLSFF), this three-year initiative commenced at six pilot universities in fall 2008: American University, Washington, D.C.; Northeastern University, Boston, MA; Ohio University, Athens, OH; Towson University, Towson, MD; Tulane University, New Orleans, LA; and University of Delaware, Newark, DE. The program's goal is not only to expand the number and breadth of Jewish studies courses, but also to provide greater opportunity for Jewish learning and engagement at schools with keen interest among students and administration, but with limited resources to date. This expansion will be accomplishe ...

JTS Fellowship in Jewish Social Entrepreneurship

Beginning as a pilot program with five students, The Jewish Theological Seminary's Fellowship in Jewish Entrepreneurship consists of three central components: an intensive training/orientation program; an internship at an organization or business that demonstrates effective modes of social change; and a biweekly seminar designed to help cultivate connections between Judaism, activism, and professional achievements. In addition, students will be invited to participate in networking opportunities with alumni, board members, and professionals in the field of social entrepreneurship.

Robert and Elisa Spungen Bildner Fellowship

With the goal of training the next generation of Jewish camp leaders, the Robert and Elisa Spungen Bildner Fellowship at Brandeis University will enable one graduate student per year to pursue a dual MA/MBA degree in Jewish Professional Leadership at Brandeis's Heller School for Social Policy and Management and at Hornstein: The Jewish Professional Leadership Program @ Brandeis. Robert and Elisa Spungen Bildner Fellows take courses in leadership and management of Jewish camping and are advised by a Hornstein faculty member with camping expertise. In addition to their academic coursework, Fellows will attend professional development opportunities offered by the Foundation, complete camp internships, and dedicate themselves to working at a Jewish camp in a leadership role for three years following graduation.

Talking Dollars and Sense About Jewish Education

The field of Jewish education has been transformed in the past 15 years by a series of bold experiments, substantial new investments and unprecedented partnerships forged by philanthropists, local federations of Jewish philanthropy and educational institutions. Still, the needs of the field are vast, and it is not at all clear whether the American Jewish community can marshal the necessary resources to revitalize itself through Jewish education. In order to assess what the community can do, both financially and programmatically, far greater clarity is needed about the dimensions of the challenge.

The Impact of the Economic Downturn on Jewish Day Schools

In the best of economic times, many-probably most-day schools and yeshivas are underfunded and, even so, successfully meet their obligations. They scrimp on support staff and maintenance and cannot provide the enhancements and extra-curricular activities that are routine in public schools and stronger private schools. Of course, there are exceptions: a small number of high-tuition institutions that cater substantially to more affluent families can afford services and salaries that 90% of our day schools cannot.
